Everything you should know about saving Instagram videos

Instagram's image sizes, and which one you get

Instagram stores several renditions of every photo and serves whichever fits the viewport. The largest public rendition is typically 1080 pixels on the long edge — 1080x1080 for a square, 1080x1350 for the tall 4:5 format, 1080x566 for landscape. That is the file Grabnode returns.

The original camera file, which may be 12 megapixels or more, is never published. Any service promising a '4K Instagram photo download' is upscaling, which invents pixels rather than recovering them.

Carousels: ten items, ten files

A carousel post can hold up to twenty mixed photos and videos, each stored as its own media object. Grabnode lists every slide separately so you can take the third image without saving the other nine, and mixed carousels return their videos as MP4 alongside the photos as JPG.

One thing to note: the slide order in the list matches the order in the post, which is not always the order the creator uploaded them in if they reordered before publishing.

Profile pictures and metadata

Profile photos are served at a modest resolution — Instagram simply does not publish a large version — so expect a small square image rather than a poster-quality file. Grabnode returns the largest size the profile exposes.

Downloaded images keep the pixels but not the story: Instagram strips most EXIF data on upload, so location, camera model and capture time are already gone before the photo reaches you. Captions and alt text are not part of the image file either.

Instagram downloader FAQ

How do I download an Instagram photo?

Open the post, tap the three dots and choose Copy link, then paste the link above. Grabnode returns the full-size JPG so you can save it in one tap.

Can I download every image in a carousel post?

Yes. For a multi-image post Grabnode lists each photo separately — download them one by one, or just the slides you need.

What resolution are the photos?

You get the largest file Instagram publishes for that post, typically 1080px on the long edge. Instagram re-compresses uploads, so nothing larger exists on their servers.

Can I download someone's profile picture?

Grabnode reads public posts. For a profile picture, open a post from that account and download the image, or use the post that features the photo — private profiles cannot be read at all.

Do photos download with a watermark?

No. Grabnode never adds a watermark or overlay — you get the original JPG exactly as Instagram serves it.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in Safari or Chrome with no app install. On iPhone the file lands in Files; on Android it goes to your Downloads folder or gallery.

Can I download photos from a private account?

No. Only publicly accessible posts can be extracted, even if you follow the account.

Is it legal to download Instagram photos?

Saving your own photos is fine. For other people's images, get permission — reposting someone's photo without consent breaches Instagram's Terms of Use and copyright law.
