What Grabnode is
Grabnode started as a personal workaround. Saving a clip you made yourself, or a video a client sent you on Instagram, usually means screen-recording it, losing quality and ending up with a file full of interface chrome. The tools that promised to fix that were covered in pop-unders, forced you through three redirects, and half the time returned a broken link. We built the version we wanted to use: one input box, a straight answer, and the file.
Today Grabnode covers TikTok, YouTube, Instagram (feed posts, Reels, Stories and photos), Facebook, X and Threads, plus a small set of file utilities — a video compressor, a PDF merger and a Word-to-PDF converter — that run entirely inside your browser tab. Everything is free, and nothing on the site is gated behind an account.
How the extractor actually works
When you paste a link, your browser sends only that URL to our server function. The server asks the platform for the publicly available rendition list for that post — the same list the platform's own web player reads — normalises it into a tidy set of quality options, and sends it back. When you click a download button, the file transfers to your device. We do not proxy, re-encode, cache or archive the media, and we hold no library of other people's videos.
Because we only ever see what is already public, private accounts, friends-only posts, deleted videos and region-blocked content cannot be extracted. If a video does not play for a logged-out visitor, Grabnode cannot reach it either. That is a deliberate boundary, not a bug we plan to fix.
The file tools are different — nothing leaves your device
The video compressor, PDF merger and Word to PDF converter use WebAssembly and browser APIs to do their work locally. Your document or video is read from disk into the tab's memory, processed by your own processor, and written back out as a download. No upload happens at any point, which is why these tools keep working even if your connection drops mid-way.
What we store
Browsing Grabnode requires no account. Submitted links are used to serve your request and are kept only in short-lived logs used for rate limiting and abuse prevention. The "recent grabs" list you may see on the homepage lives in your own browser's local storage and never reaches us — clearing site data erases it.
If you choose to create an optional account, we store your email, a display name and avatar if you set one, and any links you deliberately save as favourites. You can delete those at any time from your account page. Full detail lives in our privacy policy.
How Grabnode is funded
Bandwidth, the extraction API and hosting all cost money, and we do not charge users. The site is funded by display advertising and voluntary tips. We have removed pop-unders, click-anywhere interstitials and push notification prompts from the site because they made the product worse — if you ever meet one on Grabnode, it is a mistake and we want to hear about it.
Using it responsibly
Grabnode is a general-purpose tool. Downloading your own uploads, media you have permission to keep, or content under a licence that allows it is fine. Re-uploading someone else's video, stripping credit, or using copyrighted material commercially without permission is not, and it breaches both the platforms' terms and our terms of service. Rights holders can reach us directly and we act on well-founded removal requests for anything under our control.
Talk to us
Bug reports, platform requests, API access and partnership questions all go to the same place: our contact page or hello@grabnode.app. Grabnode is a small independent project, so replies come from a person rather than a ticket queue.
