Everything you should know about saving Facebook videos

Public, friends-only and the grey area between

Facebook's privacy model is the messiest of the major platforms. The same video can be public on a Page, friends-only on a personal profile, or visible only to members of a private group — and the URL often looks identical in all three cases. Grabnode can extract the first; the other two are not publicly retrievable and never will be.

If a link fails, open it in a logged-out browser window. Facebook will either play the video or show you a login wall, and that answers the question immediately.

SD and HD on Facebook are two separately stored files

Facebook keeps a standard-definition and a high-definition rendition of most uploads and picks between them based on your connection. That is why we usually show two options rather than a resolution ladder. HD is typically 720p or 1080p depending on what was uploaded; SD sits around 360p to 480p and is genuinely useful when you just need to send something over a slow connection.

Older uploads, and videos originally posted from a low-end phone, often have no HD rendition at all. In that case only the SD file exists and there is nothing higher to fetch.

Watch videos, Reels, live replays and shared links

Grabnode accepts facebook.com/watch links, permalink URLs, fb.watch short links, video posts on Pages, and Reels. Live broadcasts become downloadable once the replay has finished processing, which can take a while for long streams.

One quirk to watch for: a link copied from the Facebook mobile app sometimes carries tracking parameters that point at your session rather than the post. If a paste fails, open the video in a browser first and copy the address from the address bar.

Facebook downloader FAQ

How do I download a Facebook video in HD?

Paste the post link and press Grab. When Facebook publishes an HD rendition, Grabnode lists it as 1080p or 720p alongside the SD option — pick the highest one shown.

Does it work with Facebook Reels?

Yes. Facebook Reels download as vertical MP4 files at their native resolution, exactly like feed videos.

Can I download videos from a Facebook group or page?

Yes, provided the group or page is public. Videos inside closed or secret groups cannot be reached.

Why does my link say the video is unavailable?

Most often the post is friends-only, has been deleted, or is region-restricted. Open the link in a private browser window — if you cannot see it logged out, Grabnode cannot either.

What about Facebook Watch and live replays?

Public Watch clips and archived live replays work. Streams that are still broadcasting do not.

Do I need the Facebook app installed?

No. Copy the link from the app or from facebook.com in any browser — Grabnode needs nothing else installed.

Is there a watermark on downloads?

No. Grabnode returns the original file exactly as Facebook serves it, with nothing added.

Is it legal to download Facebook videos?

Save your own uploads freely. For other people's videos, get their permission — redistributing content you do not own breaches Facebook's terms and copyright law.
