A YouTube Short is an ordinary upload that meets two conditions: vertical or square aspect ratio and a duration under three minutes. It gets its own player surface and its own /shorts/ URL, but the file behind it lives in exactly the same system as a regular video.
That has a practical consequence: a /shorts/ link and a /watch?v= link with the same ID point at the same media. If one fails to paste cleanly, the other form usually works.
Most Shorts are uploaded at 1080x1920. Because the frame is tall, encoders spend their bits differently than on a landscape video, and heavy motion at that resolution can look softer than the same footage would in widescreen. Grabnode returns the highest rendition YouTube publishes for that Short, which is generally the same file the app streams to you.
Shorts filmed inside the YouTube app rather than uploaded from a camera roll are compressed on the phone first, so they arrive at YouTube already degraded.
Many Shorts use tracks from YouTube's licensed audio library. That licence covers use inside YouTube — it does not travel with the file when you download it. Reuploading a Short with its licensed track to another platform is a common way to collect a copyright claim.
